Jewelry Guide

A few basics to help you pick the right length, size, and style — and keep your pieces looking their best.

Necklace Lengths

Collar (14") sits snugly at the base of the neck — great with an open collar or strapless neckline.

Choker (14–16") rests just above the collarbone. Flattering with almost anything, and a good choice if you want the necklace to be the focal point.

Princess (17–19") is the most versatile length, landing right at or just below the collarbone. Works with nearly any neckline, which is why most pendant necklaces come on a chain this length.

Matinee (20–24") falls between the collarbone and the bust — a good pick for layering under a second, shorter necklace.

Opera (28–36") sits at or below the bust, and can be worn doubled for a shorter, layered look.

Rope (36"+) falls below the waist and is often worn wrapped multiple times for a completely different look at a shorter effective length.

Finding Your Ring Size

Find a ring you already own that fits comfortably — snug enough that it won't fall off, loose enough to slide over your knuckle with a gentle tug. Measure its inner diameter, or take it to any local jeweler for a quick, usually free, sizing. Fingers run slightly smaller in the morning and in cold weather, so for the most accurate fit, size later in the day when they're at their normal size.

Earring Styles

Studs sit directly on the earlobe — simple, versatile, and the easiest to wear every day.

Hoops circle through the earlobe. Small hoops work for daily wear; larger ones make more of a statement.

Drops hang below the ear on a hinge or wire — dressier, with length ranging from just below the lobe to shoulder-grazing.

Threaders use a fine chain drawn through the piercing instead of a traditional back — a delicate, minimal look.

Clasp Types

Lobster clasp — a spring-loaded hook you open with a small lever. Secure and common on necklaces and bracelets.

Spring ring — similar in function to a lobster clasp but round; common on more delicate chains.

Toggle — a bar slides through a ring to close. Easy to fasten one-handed, and often a design feature in its own right on bracelets.

Caring for Your Jewelry

Put jewelry on after applying lotion, perfume, or hairspray, not before — those products are one of the most common causes of dulling and discoloration over time. Take it off before showering, swimming, or exercising.

To clean a piece, wipe it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. For anything more than light dust, a drop of mild dish soap in warm water and a soft cloth or toothbrush will do the job — rinse well and dry completely before putting it away.

Store pieces separately so they don't scratch each other — a fabric-lined box with individual compartments, or even small resealable bags, both work well.
