Pearl Guide

Pearls are organic gemstones valued for their smooth surface, natural luster, and timeless appearance. They are commonly used in a wide variety of jewelry styles and may vary in shape, size, color, and finish.

Below are some of the most common pearl categories used in jewelry.

Natural Pearls

Natural pearls form without human intervention when an irritant becomes trapped inside certain mollusks, such as oysters or mussels.

Over time, layers of nacre develop around the irritant, gradually forming a pearl. Natural pearls are relatively rare and may display natural variations in shape, color, and surface characteristics.

Cultured Pearls

Cultured pearls are formed using both natural processes and human assistance.

In pearl farming, a small irritant is intentionally introduced into the mollusk to encourage pearl formation. The pearl then develops naturally over time within the shell.

Most pearls used in modern jewelry are cultured pearls.

Imitation or Simulated Pearls

Imitation or simulated pearls are manufactured materials designed to resemble natural or cultured pearls.

They may be made from glass, shell, plastic, resin, or other materials coated to create a pearl-like appearance.

Imitation pearls are valued primarily for their decorative appearance and affordability.

Characteristics of Pearls

Pearls may naturally vary in:

  • shape
  • size
  • color
  • luster
  • surface texture

Small imperfections and natural variations are common in genuine natural and cultured pearls.

Imitation pearls may appear more uniform in shape, color, and surface appearance due to the manufacturing process.

Pearl Care

To help preserve their appearance:

Pearls are delicate and may be sensitive to chemicals, cosmetics, moisture, and abrasive surfaces.

  • avoid exposure to perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, and harsh chemicals
  • wipe pearls gently with a soft cloth after wearing
  • store pearls separately from harder jewelry materials
  • avoid prolonged exposure to moisture or direct heat

Proper care and storage may help maintain the appearance of pearls over time.
